The Hulstuhara Ruins were built over 700 years ago in Ohama, Ishigaki City, and were designated as a national historic site in 1978.
Although the masonry walls suggest the remains of a castle, the details are not known and it is highly likely to be the remains of a mansion. When a survey of the ruins was conducted, many Yaeyama ware and Chinese ceramics, which were probably used in daily life, were discovered, but few weapons were found. Therefore, it is said that the Hulstuhara Ruins may be the remains of a mansion rather than a castle.
In addition, the stone mounds at the Hulstuhara Ruins seem to have been constructed using coral-derived Ryukyu limestone to form the ruins of a castle, and it is said that there are stone mounds ranging from No. 1 to No. 15.

Many parts of the building were damaged, but have now been restored. Although it is a very large historic site, it takes only 20 minutes to go around the site even if you take your time. It is a historic site with a very atmospheric atmosphere, and the stone mounds are still in their natural state, so it is a spot where you can feel some mysterious power. As it has not been determined whether Hulstuhara Ruins are the ruins of a castle or a mansion, no documents related to this site have yet been discovered.

We can only speculate that it may have been used as a mansion, based on the household items that were excavated and the small number of weapons that were found. Therefore, since Oyakeakahachi was based in Ohama, it is thought that it may have been used as a residence. Oyakeakahachi is said to be a legendary tribe that rebelled against the Ryukyu Kingdom after being born in Hateruma Island about 500 years ago and moved to Ishigaki Island, making the Ohama area their base. Although they were defeated by the government, they are regarded as heroes who stood up for the people against heavy taxes.

Oyakeakahachi was known to live in the Ohama area, so there are statues and monuments in Sakihara Park, and a plaque at the Hulstuhara site suggests that Oyakeakahachi may have been in residence there.
