Hello everyone!
Suddenly, did you know that Ishigaki Island is one of the best astronomical observation spots in the world?
Ishigaki Island was the first island in Japan to be designated as a starry sky reserve, and at the time it was said to offer the second most beautiful starry sky in Asia.
There are several spots where you can view the starry sky of Ishigaki Island, and one of them is the Ishigakijima Observatory.
Equipped with a huge telescope that allows visitors to closely observe the starry sky that covers the entire sky, this place is a must-see for stargazers.
This article introduces Ishigakijima Observatory.

What is Ishigakijima Observatory?

Ishigakijima Observatory

Ishigakijima Observatory was established in 2006 and is recommended for those who want to do serious astronomical observation. It is the best place for astronomical observation because there are few city lights and you can see the starry sky clearly, and there is a big telescope in the observatory. The observatory is also famous for its clear view of the starry night sky, and has a 4U2D theater where visitors can learn about the universe in three dimensions, making it a great place for both study and sightseeing.

However, advance reservations are required, so be sure to check it out. When the sun goes down, you can look at the stars through the large telescope equipped at the observatory. Of course, you can also visually check the stars, but the giant telescope allows you to see every detail of the stars! This is a great place to learn, and is very popular with families with children as well as star gazers!

More about Ishigakijima Observatory

Ishigakijima Observatory

Ishigaki Island offers the most beautiful starry sky in Japan. Ishigaki Island has Ishigakijima Observatory which was established in 2006 at the top of Maesedake, the highest mountain in Japan. Ishigakijima Observatory is equipped with "Murikabushi Telescope" which is the largest telescope in Kyushu and Okinawa with an aperture of 105cm. Star gazing through the Murikabushi Telescope provides a beautiful starry sky. During stargazing, you can listen to a star commentary by an expert of the Yaeyama Starry Sky Society. In addition to stargazing, there is the Starry Sky Learning Room where visitors can experience the starry sky during the daytime. You can experience the three-dimensional images of the universe for free anytime while Ishigakijima Observatory is open.

Ishigakijima Observatory

The reason why Ishigakijima Observatory was established on Ishigaki Island is related to its unique atmospheric conditions. Although there is often a westerly wind called the jet stream over Honshu, the atmosphere over Yaeyama, including Ishigaki Island, is extremely stable with almost no influence from the jet stream.

Also, all 21 first magnitude stars can be seen, and major stars such as the Milky Way and the Summer Triangle can be seen. Even the Southern Cross, which is said to be invisible in the northern hemisphere, can be observed.
