How to get to and play at Sakieda Beach on Ishigaki Island! Our Ishigaki Island resident staff will give you a thorough explanation!
Hello everyone!
Most visitors to the beaches of Ishigaki Island have at one time or another ventured to the beach. Have you ever been to that beach? Fusaki Beach? Maesato Beach? They are very popular beaches introduced in guidebooks. If you come all the way to Ishigaki Island, why don't you go to a secluded beach with few people instead of a popular beach overflowing with people?
There are many beaches in Ishigaki Island, and some of them are called "hole-in-the-wall" beaches. One of them is Sakieda Beach. Sakieda Beach is located in the Sakieda area in the western part of Ishigaki Island. It is a spacious beach with a great view of the surrounding ocean and a private beach since it is rarely visited by people. This article introduces Sakieda Beach, a secluded and secluded beach.

What is Sakieda Beach?

Sakieda Beach is a hidden beach located in the western part of Ishigaki Island. There is no access road to the beach, but rather a paved path leading down a cliff to the ocean, hence the name "hidden beach". Because it does not follow a proper path, it is rarely visited by visitors. If there are people, they are usually parked near the entrance to the paved road. Although the beach is rarely visited by people, there are often more boats out at sea than people because the sea at Sakieda Beach is easy to access by snorkeling and diving boats.
Directions to Sakieda Beach

The beach is located about 30 minutes drive from Shin-Ishigaki Airport. From the city center, take Prefectural Road 79 toward Kabira, and at the intersection of Sakieda, head toward Mikamisaki. Drive on and park your car in a field-like area where the road reaches a plateau. After leaving the paved road on the hillside, drive through the woods until you come to a fork in the road. Be careful on the way, as the road is steep at times.
More information about Sakieda Beach

Sakieda Beach, also known as Makigai Beach, is an inverted C-shaped beach located in the western part of Ishigaki Island. From Sakieda Beach, you can see Kabira, the most scenic spot in Ishigaki Island, and it looks like an isolated island floating in the air. Behind the beach, you can hear the refreshing sound of clear stream flowing from Yarabudake, famous for troll's tongue. Be very careful, as the stream is located at the end of a sandy beach and a rocky path. When you bathe in the clear stream, you will feel cold and shakiri, and your whole body's nerves will be excited.
Sakieda Beach is a tropical beach with a cute-shaped rock nicknamed "Onigiri Iwa" (rice ball rock) and coral in the shallows.

In recent years, with global warming, coral reefs in Ishigaki Island have been bleached, which has become a problem. However, the coral reefs at this branch tip beach are alive and well, and colorful corals can be observed. Therefore, it looks like a good place for snorkeling, but in fact, swimming is prohibited on this beach. There is a no-swimming sign posted on the beach, so you are not allowed to enter.
The reason for this may be that there have been previous news reports of damage caused by typhoons and sharks. Ishigaki Island is most visited by typhoons in summer. Some people enter the sea entry without knowing that. It is reckless to do marine activities on the day when typhoons visit. As for the incident reported as shark attack, it is thought that the victim was swimming in Kabira Bay where the current is fast and swimming is prohibited, and encountered a shark after being swept out to sea.
Other than the above, we have not heard of any other cases of shark attacks or encounters, so it is basically unlikely that sharks will appear on the beach, but do not swim in areas where swimming is prohibited. Nevertheless, the waters of Sakieda Beach, with its beautiful coral formations, have diving spots. Therefore, it is recommended to join a snorkeling or diving tour led by a professional guide.
How to Play at Sakieda Beach

Sakieda Beach is a no-swimming beach, as indicated by the sign. As a result, there are few beach entry activities or swimming. Therefore, visitors can enjoy beachcombing, looking for shells and other floating debris on the beach, and resting in the shade of trees.
Corals are also growing in the shallows and can be observed without going into the sea. There are also Instagram-worthy spots such as Onigiri Rock, which may be good for photo lovers.
This is not to say that marine activities are not possible at all. In fact, since the area is located in a place where it is easy to go out to sea by boat, you can enjoy activities if you go on a tour with a skilled guide or instructor. If you want to enjoy the colorful coral reefs, we recommend that you join a diving tour.
